Frequently Asked Questions about our solid wood desk tops

Desk tops?

Products titled “desk tops” include the table top only, not the legs/frame. The legs/frame need to be purchased separately. You can purchase the Skarsta/Bekant legs directly from IKEA, or we can custom make a table top to fit other brands like Uplift, Furna, Lundia etc if you contact us.

You will need to purchase the frames separately, for the IKEA products, the fittings for the desk top come with the legs. Any other accessories you see in the pictures are not included. The monitor stand (made from the same length of wood, and so cheaper when purchased together) is an excellent compliment, and can be purchased separately.

How much does the desk top weigh?

Oak has a density weight of about 0.8kg/dm3 , that is double the weight of the MDF tops that generally come as standard, so bear this in mind. You can use handy calculators like this one to get an estimated weight.

How will it be delivered?

By our own delivery team. It’s a big operation but well worth it. One week we focus on the north of the UK, the next we focus on the south. This does extend our lead time, but we just cannot entrust your beautiful desk top to standard couriers. Our drivers will not fit or install the desk top for you, but they may take it into the room you require if you ask them nicely…

Do you treat the timber?

Yes and no. This is an indoor product. We do coat your desk top with 2-3 applications of Finishing Oil, until we get to the right colour, and layer of clear wax to protect the surface. You may wish to add beeswax or similar treatments to protect your desk top, though this is not required.

We make sure that the raw oak or pine we use is of the highest quality. When working with solid wood, we cannot guarantee the exact grain and texture your desk top will have. This is part of its beauty, and what makes it unique.

What about wood shrinkage?

Our wood is stored in insulated environment, however, when it reaches your home, it will very likely be at a higher ambient temperature. This means more moisture will be released from the wood, which occasionally can result in the wood shrinking (horizontally, never vertically) up to a couple of millimetres, meaning once flush edges may develop a slight ridge. This is a natural process and adds to the character of the desk. If this concerns you, avoid edge boards (reverse grain ends) and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Oak shrinkage sometimes occurs and should be accepted within reasonable parameters.

When will my order be ready?

COVID-19 UPDATE: As of 13th October 2020 we are now only accepting a certain amount of orders each week. Once we have filled up a week, the estimate moves on a week. We have plans to increase production capacity in November. Table top product pages have an “estimated delivery before” date. Estimates may vary by up 2 weeks depending on your ordered items or your location.

Once you have placed your order, it could take up to 3-5 weeks to arrive (some arrive in just 1-2 weeks). This is because your desk top order is hand-made to your exact requirements. Good things come to those who wait.

When should I order?

As soon as you are settled on the dimensions of your table top, place your order. If you are not 100% sure as to what desk frame you are going to purchase, place the order for the table top now, and we can change the compatibility of your desk top without charge later on. Desk frames are stock items and so usually are dispatched much quicker.

How do you price your desk tops?

Our pricing is very straight forward. We even have a desk top pricing calculator. The base price (and majority) of your desk top is set by The Really Good Oak Shop. They make, hand deliver and guarantee your desk top. Sit/Stand Desk Tops adds a fee to each order as we arrange the order including any templating (be that Skarsta, Bekant, Idasen, Ikea screw legs etc). We also deal with the marketing and website costs, as well as providing any ordering help and support you might need. That’s it.

What is the process?

The desk tops are made using the highest quality sustainably sourced solid oak and pine.

Our sustainably sourced European ‘white’ oak comes in kiln dried furniture panels 600mm wide direct from the sawmill. Most furniture makers will use these panels direct from the saw mill as they are highly stable in the manufacturing of furniture.

We use standard furniture techniques to size the top to your exact requirements, building in edge boards if required. If the desk top is more than 600mm wide we join the oak panels together.

The top edges are then slightly rounded off (chamfer) for comfort.

Next the holes are drilled, to the exact same dimensions as the desk top you are replacing, not just the width but also the depth is taken into consideration.

Finally, the desk top is treated with finishing oil on the oak tops, or a light brown wax on the pine tops, to bring out the subtle hues in the raw material.

The desk corners are then protected, and the top is delivered by our own team of delivery drivers to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.
