FAQs

Desk tops?

Products titled “desk tops” include the table top only, not the legs/frame. The legs/frame need to be purchased separately. You can purchase the Skarsta/Bekant legs directly from IKEA, or we can custom make a table top to fit other brands like Uplift, Furna, Lundia etc if you contact us.

You will need to purchase the frames separately, for the IKEA products, the fittings for the desk top come with the legs. Any other accessories you see in the pictures are not included. The monitor raiser (made from the same length of wood, and so cheaper when purchased together) is an excellent compliment, and can be purchased separately.

How will it be delivered?

By our own delivery team. It’s a big operation but well worth it. One week we focus on the north of the UK, the next we focus on the south. This does extend our lead time, but we just cannot entrust your beautiful desk top to standard couriers. Our drivers will not fit or install the desk top for you, but they may take it into the room you require if you ask them nicely…

Do you treat the timber?

Yes and no. This is an indoor product. We do coat your desk top with 2-3 applications of Danish Oil, until we get to the right colour, and layer of clear wax to protect the surface. You may wish to add beeswax or similar treatments to protect your desk top, though this is not required.

We make sure that the raw oak or pine we use is of the highest quality. When working with solid wood, we cannot guarantee the exact grain and texture your desk top will have. This is part of its beauty, and what makes it unique.

What about wood shrinkage?

Our wood is stored in insulated environment, however, when it reaches your home, it will very likely be at a higher ambient temperature. This means more moisture will be released from the wood, which can result in the wood shrinking (horizontally, never vertically) up to a couple of millimetres, meaning once flush edges may develop a slight ridge. This is a natural process and adds to the character of the desk.

Oak shrinkage is normal and should be accepted within reasonable parameters.

What is the process?

The desk tops are made using the highest quality sustainably sourced solid oak and pine. First it is plained down to reveal the beautiful grain, and form a flat surface. The plank is then cut into 5 sections (or 3 if you prefer a plainer style), and glued together as is the industry standard. The glue is left to go off for at least 48 hours, then the edges are slightly rounded for comfort. Next the holes are drilled, to the exact same dimensions as the desk top you are replacing, not just the width but also the depth is taken into consideration. Finally, the desk top is treated with Danish oil on the oak tops, or a light brown wax on the pine tops, to bring out the subtle hues in the raw material. The desk is then wrapped and delivered by our own team of delivery drivers to ensure the top arrives in perfect condition.

When will my order be ready?

Once you have placed your order, it could take up to 3-4 weeks to arrive (some arrive in just 1-2 weeks). This is because your desk top order is hand-made for you. Good things come to those who wait.

Feel free to drop us a message to see what the current estimated wait time is if you need your desk quick smart.

How much does the desk top weigh?

18kg for the 120 x 70 cm size, 27kg for the 160 x 80 cm size. That is double the weight of the MDF top that comes as standard, so bear this in mind.

What do you mean by zero waste accessories?

We hate wasting beautiful solid wood. Our monitor raisers are made from carefully selected remaining wood from other desk tops. If you buy a raiser at the same time as your desk top, it is highly likely we can use the whole beam to make your desk top. No raw material is wasted, and we pass on the discount to you with the code ZEROWASTE which takes £15 off the price of any monitor raiser when purchased with a desk top.
